How long does teeth whitening last?

Plan on about three months. That is when most ProElite Aesthetics clients in Saskatoon come back for a refresh, and it is the cadence we recommend to everyone who sits in the chair. Heavy coffee drinkers and smokers notice the colour drifting sooner than that. People who mostly drink water can go longer before it shows.

Why three months and not a fixed number

Whitening has no expiry date built into it. Nothing inside the treatment fades on a schedule. What happens instead is that your teeth start picking up stain again the moment you walk out, the same way they always did, and how quickly that shows depends entirely on what passes over them.

Two clients can leave the same session at the same shade and look different by March. One of them drinks four coffees a day. Neither of them did anything wrong.

So three months is a recommendation rather than a countdown. It is the point where a touch-up is still a touch-up, instead of starting again from where you began.

What pulls the colour back fastest

Stain comes from food and drink. The ones that do the most work are coffee, black tea, red wine, cola, tomato sauce, curry and soy sauce. Smoking and vaping beat every item on that list.

If your coffee intake climbs between November and March, that is the stretch where you will see it move. Whitening in October and expecting it to hold through a prairie winter of hot coffee is optimistic.

What should I avoid in the first two days?

This is the part that decides most of the result. Straight after a session your teeth take on colour more easily than they normally would, so those first forty-eight hours carry more weight than the month that follows.

Stick to things that would not mark a white shirt. Water, milk, chicken, white rice, plain pasta and bananas are all fine. Use a soft brush with a plain white toothpaste, and leave the coloured mouthwash until later in the week. The full list sits on our aftercare page.

Does whitening wear off on its own?

No. The shade you leave with is the shade you keep until something stains it. That is the reason nobody can give you an honest fixed number, and the reason a clinic quoting you an exact duration is guessing.

When should I book a touch-up?

Around the three month mark. A touch-up is the same session as the first one, and it holds the shade rather than rebuilding it. Returning clients pay 15% less than they did the first time, so keeping it up costs less than letting it go and redoing the whole thing.

If you are coming up on three months, book a touch-up at the studio or at your place. If you have not whitened with us before, the Saskatoon page has the prices and what happens in the chair.

Anything that makes it last longer?

Not a product we can sell you. The clients who hold their shade longest tend to drink coffee through a straw, rinse with water afterwards, and come back before the drift gets far enough to need a full session.
